PV export valorization regimes and BESS mechanisms — Spain.

What PV export is paid, when the battery can charge from the grid, and what additional revenues are possible — regime by regime.

The battery dispatch mode ("Optimized" = price arbitrage, grid charging allowed; or "Simple rule" = charge from PV surplus only) is an independent choice from the regime across all Spanish frameworks below.

Compensación simplificada — RD 244/2019Spot price × compensation ratioCapped monthly at the import bill (never a cash payment, only a deduction)As per chosen mode
Autoconsumo puroNone — export forbidden, curtailedExport = 0As per chosen mode
RECORE — RD 917/2025 of 15 October 2025 (amends RD 413/2014)NewSpot price + indicative regulatory premium (specific retributive regime)Negative spot-price hours in blocks of 6 consecutive hours or more don't count as equivalent operating hours for the premiumAs per chosen modeSpecific retributive regime (RECORE), distinct from standard self-consumption — RD 917/2025 now allows hybridization with storage without penalizing the premium calculation. Ancillary services and complementary mechanisms

Two distinct logics: external revenue (a third party pays you) or savings on the client's own bill (you pay less). Each mechanism activates independently of the others. Official REE (Red Eléctrica) terminology.

MechanismRevenue natureCo-optimized hour by hour?Key parameterLimit / assumed simplification
Regulación primaria (FCR)External revenueYesCapacity price (€/MW/h), holding durationMandatory, unpaid automatic service for large groups in Spain — limited direct revenue; variable reservation hour by hour in theory, real markets often require a fixed commitment over a time block
Regulación secundaria (aFRR) and terciaria (mFRR)NewExternal revenueYesMarket price (€/MW/h and €/MWh), activation time (5 min aFRR, 12.5 min mFRR)Spain connected to the European mFRR platform since December 2024 and aFRR since June 2025 — easier battery access but tighter technical requirements (dual-control EMS) from 2026
SRAD — Servicio de Respuesta Activa de la DemandaExternal revenueNo — annual statisticSheddable capacity (MW), expected activations/yearTheoretical maximum potential — real revenue is frequently well below this, depending on the year and zone
